Apurímac, etimològicament prové del vocable quechua Apu = Déu, Rimac = parlador, que significa El Déu que parla.
Parlen de la ceremonia en honor a la Pachamama (Mare Terra)
Apurímac formava part del territori dels chancas, aguerrits enemics dels inques que van aconseguir dominar a més Ayacucho i Huancavelica. Quan van intentar estendre els seus dominis cap al Cusco van ser derrotats per l'Inca Pachacútec, qui posteriorment va annexar al Tahuantinsuyo el que avui és Apurímac.

A 73 km al nord-est de la ciutat d'Abancay (2 hores, 30 minuts en bus).
Límit entre les regions de Apurímac i Cusco, aquest canó és un dels més profunds d'Amèrica i possiblement del món.
