La primavera de 2005, el fotògraf de National Geographic James Balog es va dirigir a l'Àrtic en una tasca difícil:
La captura d'imatges per ajudar a explicar la història de canvi climàtic de la Terra. Fins i tot amb una educació científica, Balog havia estat un escèptic sobre el canvi climàtic i un cínic sobre la naturalesa de la investigació acadèmica. Però aquell primer viatge al nord li va obrir els ulls a la història més gran de la història humana i provocar un repte dins d'ell que posés la seva carrera i la seva benestar en risc.
Chasing Ice és la història de la missió d'un home per canviar el rumb de la història mitjançant la recopilació d'evidència innegable del nostre planeta canviant.
Pocs mesos després d'aquell primer viatge a Islàndia, el fotògraf va concebre l'atrevida expedició de la seva vida:
Extreme Ice Survey. Amb un grup de joves aventurers , va  començar a desplegar revolucionaries càmeres time-lapse  a través del   Àrtic per capturar un registre de diversos anys de les glaceres canviants del món. A mesura que el debat es polaritza a Amèrica i la intensitat dels  desastres naturals  al món, Balog es troba en el límit de les seves forces. Lluitant contra la tecnologia no provada en condicions sota zero, es troba cara a cara amb la seva pròpia mortalitat. Es necessiten anys per veure els fruits de la tasca de Balog. Els seus vídeos inquietantment bells comprimeixen un any en segons i capturen les antigues muntanyes de gel en moviment, ja que desapareixen a un ritme impressionant. Chasing Ice representa un fotògraf tractant de lliurar proves i esperança al nostre planeta contra els afectes del carboni alliberat per la nostra acció.

In the spring of 2005, National Geographic photographer James Balog headed to the Arctic on a tricky assignment: to capture images to help tell the story of the Earth's changing climate. Even with a scientific upbringing, Balog had been a skeptic about climate change and a cynic about the nature of academic research. But that first trip north opened his eyes to the biggest story in human history and sparked a challenge within him that would put his career and his very well-being at risk.

Chasing Ice is the story of one man's mission to change the tide of history by gathering undeniable evidence of our changing planet. Within months of that first trip to Iceland, the photographer conceived the boldest expedition of his life: The Extreme Ice Survey. With a band of young adventurers in tow, Balog began deploying revolutionary time-lapse cameras across the brutal Arctic to capture a multi-year record of the world's changing glaciers.

As the debate polarizes America and the intensity of natural disasters ramps up globally, Balog finds himself at the end of his tether. Battling untested technology in subzero conditions, he comes face to face with his own mortality. It takes years for Balog to see the fruits of his labor. His hauntingly beautiful videos compress years into seconds and capture ancient mountains of ice in motion as they disappear at a breathtaking rate. Chasing Ice depicts a photographer trying to deliver evidence and hope to our carbon-powered planet.
