L' Antàrtida / Antartica

L' Antàrtida (de l'adjectiu llatí antarcticus , i aquest al seu torn del grec ανταρκτικός antarktikós , 'oposat al Àrtic '; amb la terminació -da, sorgida en analogia amb topònims com Nova Zelanda i Atlàntida ),  també anomenada Antàrtica a Xile  o continent antàrtic , és el continent sobre el qual es troba el Pol Sud . La definició tradicional coincideix amb la definició política, en la qual l'Antàrtida comprèn els territoris al sud del paral·lel 60 ° S, els que estan sota el Tractat Antàrtic . Atenent més a la geografia física , el límit estaria en la Convergència Antàrtica , incloent llavors també a les illes Georgias del Sud , Sandwich del Sud , la illa Bouvet , l'arxipèlag de Kerguelen i les illes Heard i McDonald . Té una forma gairebé circular de 4500  km de diàmetre sobre la qual sobresurt una estreta península en forma d'aquest, projectada cap a l'extrem austral de Sud-amèrica .  Conegut també com «sisè continent», és, si es pren el nivell superficial sobre el nivell del mar actual mitjana de la seva inlandsis , el continent més elevat de la Terra , amb una altitud mitjana de 2000  msnm . Alberga al voltant del 80% de l' aigua dolça del planeta. És també el continent amb la mitjana d'humitat més baix de la Terra i el de temperatura mitjana més baixa.  El punt més alt del continent és el massís Vinson amb 4900 msnm. El mont Erebus és un volcà actiu de l'Antàrtida situat a la costa oriental de illa de Ross . La seva elevació és de 3794  msnm .
